Tiger Woods Divorce Looming?

by thetodaynews on Nov.30, 2009, under sports

tigerIt’s never a good sign when the top Thanksgiving weekend news story is not about Black Friday or the Detroit Lions, but rather about your wife smashing the back window of your car with a golf club at 2am after a supermarket tabloid claimed you were having an affair.

That is exactly what happened to Tiger Woods over the weekend.

Tiger’s image has been carefully controlled by his PR people over the years. In the Far East he is marketed as a Thai, shown only with his Thai/Chinese mother, and in America he is marketed as an African-American, shown only with his African-American/Chinese father.

How will Tiger handle a situation his PR people cannot control? Only time will tell…

Does the Band “The Strange Familiar” Sound Familiar? It Should…

by thetodaynews on Nov.25, 2009, under entertainment

The Strange Familiar
There are a lot of great bands out there whose songs you have heard, but never knew the performer’s name.

One such band is “The Strange Familiar”, whose songs have been featured on ABC Family’s “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” as well on NBC’s “The Biggest Loser”.

Founding member Kira Leyden’s amazing vocals combined with the band’s piano and guitar-based arrangements (written by Kira and band co-founder Jeff Andrea) make them an arena-band just waiting to be discovered, as their televised songs “Courage Is”, “Secret Life” and “I Just Want To Love You” demonstrate.

At the time of this writing, ABC Family has a free download of the band’s new single “This is Gravity” available. Check it out!

2010 Super Bowl Halftime Show: The Who

by thetodaynews on Nov.24, 2009, under entertainment, sports

Roger daltrey
It is being widely discussed that classic British rock band The Who will be performing in the halftime show of Super Bowl XLIV.

Although we give props to Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend for their contribution to rock and roll, we can’t help but yawn at the selection of another “safe” (and, let’s be honest, “old”) halftime band, a lingering result of Janet Jackson’s 2004 famous nip-slip at her performance during Super Bowl XXXVIII.

It looks The Today News.com staffers will, once again, use the Super Bowl halftime as an opportunity to refill the bowls of Cheetos, talk about their favorite commercials and take a pee break!

Miley Cyrus Thinks “Twilight” Is “A Cult”…

by thetodaynews on Nov.24, 2009, under celebs

miley cyrus goes gothEven though “The Twilight Saga: New Moon” had the best Friday opening in movie history, one teenager who wasn’t at the theater that night was Miley Cirus.

“I think it’s like [a] cult… I think it’s a cult,” Miley told Sirius XM’s The Morning Mash Up in an interview that aired on Tuesday. “I think it’s bad. I think it’s like, just people get too into it.”

And I suppose Ms. Cyrus doesn’t think that legions of kids screaming for Hannah Montana and buying Hannah merchandise all these years weren’t getting “too into it”?

New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 2010. Time to Hand Over the Reins Already?

by thetodaynews on Nov.24, 2009, under celebs, entertainment

Ryan Seacrest Dick ClarkRyan Seacrest will continue to serve as co-host with Dick Clark and as an executive producer on ““Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest” through the 2010 show, ringing in 2011.

Although Dick Clark is a legendary broadcaster and his countdown has been a New Year’s fixture for decades, many question why DC continues to appear on the show after his delibitating stroke. Critics feel that Dick Clark’s stroke-impaired appearances remind us of all the sad things that have happened in years past, instead of celebrating what is supposed to be a calendar-turning event of hope for the future.

46 Years of “Doctor Who”

by thetodaynews on Nov.23, 2009, under entertainment

Matt Smith Karen Gillan runIt was 46 years ago today that the longest running science fiction series in television history, Doctor Who, was first aired by the BBC.

Ever since that first episode on November 23, 1963, The Doctor has been running around danger nonstop! Well, almost nonstop; there was that hiatus from 1990-2004. But ever since the series relaunch in 2005 it has been extremely popular on both sides of the Atlantic.

With the selection of Matt Smith to play the newest incarnation of The Doctor, and Karen Gillan as his new companion Amy Pond, the producers are definitely trying to grab a younger audience which will hopefully keep interest in the series going for another 46 years.

Want Some “Salt” with that Tequila?

by thetodaynews on Nov.23, 2009, under celebs, entertainment

angelina jolieThis summer Angelina Jolie will star in the movie “Salt,” in which she plays a rogue CIA operative (Evelyn A. Salt) who is trying to clear her name after being accused of working for the Russians.

Although we probably don’t need ANOTHER movie rehashing a storyline about a falsely-accused rogue government operative trying to prove their innocence (”The Bourne Identity”, “Shooter” and “Enemy of the State” come to mind), since this movie stars Angelina Jolie we’re willing to look the other way and not complain!

Which Costs Less, an HDMI Cable or a McBurger? Surprise!

by thetodaynews on Nov.23, 2009, under shopping, tech

HDTV cables$1 specials aren’t just for fast food menus…$1 can also buy you an HDMI cable! While big-box retailers such as Best Buy have been lightening the wallets of their customers for years by charging $40, $50, and even $70 for a basic HDMI cable, Amazon.com has offered a cheap HDMI cable with little fanfare, costing under a dollar.

It looks the inventory bean-counters at Best Buy have finally noticed the masses of customers who have purchased an HDTV but left the store without coughing up for an HDMI cable, since Best Buy now offers a $9 HDMI 3′ cable.

Although $9 is an appropriate price-point for the convenience of having it immediately, if you know you’re going to buy an HDTV this Black Friday you can still save a lot of money by getting a handful of $1 HDMI cables in advance online before backing up the truck containing your new über-TV.
