LeBron Discovers the Internet
by thetodaynews on Jul.06, 2010, under sports
LeBron James’ website LeBronJames.com, which has been pretty much inactive for the last two years, has now sprung back to life.
The website was active from the NBA player’s 2003 draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers through 2006, but fell eventually fell into disuse when LBJ grew tired of providing updates. The previously dormant site now shows a page with LeBron’s pixelated face on it that says “Getting Closer”.
James is expected to announce which team he will sign with in the next few days.
It is very surprising that LeBronJames.com has never been fully developed. The potential ad revenue from the last several months (particularly the last few weeks) would have been staggering as fans could have visited the site for daily and sometimes hourly updates on the playoffs and on his free agency.
Michelle Wie Breaks LPGA Rules (Again)
by thetodaynews on Mar.29, 2010, under sports
Pro golfer Michelle Wie, best known for demanding to play on the mens PGA Tour even though she had never even won an LPGA event, is once again making golf news for something other than winning.
On Sunday she was given a 2-stroke penalty for grounding her club in a lake water hazard on the 11th hole of the final round of the Kia Classic at La Costa. When informed of the penalty a few holes later by an official, Wie argued for several minutes with the rules official, saying “I really think it’s not right,” before walking away.
Would Wie have scored the grounding penalty herself had the officials not caught her? At the 2005 Samsung World Championship Wie was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard, and she was again disqualified in the 2008 State Farm Classic for failing to sign a scorecard.
Self reporting is a very important aspect of golf, and it is that aspect of personal integrity which distinguishes golf from many other professional sports. Wie’s “deny and whine” mentality is more suited for the NBA, where players habitually act out looks of shock on their faces after being called for committing flagrant fouls. The PGA official was doing Wie a favor by notifying her of the penalty, before she signed (or failed to sign) her scorecard.

LeBron Changes Jersey Number….Cha-ching!
by thetodaynews on Mar.02, 2010, under sports
NBA star LeBron James has filed paperwork with the NBA requesting to change his jersey Number 23 to Number 6 next season, ostensibly to honor the NBA’s most famous #23 Michael Jordan.
Changing uniform numbers will no doubt help LeBron’s wallet as well by vaulting him back up to the top league jersey sales spot, similar to what happened when Kobe Bryant changed his jersey from #8 to #24 in 2006 and immediately went to the #1 NBA sales ranking in the world.

Shaun White laid down a Double McTwist 1260 during his victory lap round of the Men’s halfpipe at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver.
A “Double McTwist 1260″….that sounds like the name of a giant milk shake!

An Inconvenient Super Bowl
by thetodaynews on Feb.08, 2010, under sports
Super Bowl XLIV was the most-watched American television broadcast of all time, reeling in 106.5 million viewers. That topped the previous record holder, the series finale of M*A*S*H which had 105.97 million.
It was inevitable that M*A*S*H would eventually lose its record, considering the US population is now a lot larger than it was 25 years ago.
Another factor which helped set the record was the fact that the whole Eastern seaboard was snowed in, with nothing to do but watch TV. It was either watch the Super Bowl, or laugh at a DVD of Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth”…
Woman Who is 22 Rows Across the Ocean Blue
by thetodaynews on Dec.21, 2009, under sports
You may think you get some bad blisters raking the autumn leaves off your lawn, but those are nothing compared to what Ohio resident Katie Spotz is sure to chafe up during her attempt to become the youngest person to row across an ocean alone.
The 22-year old Mentor resident will depart around January 1, 2010 (weather permitting) and row 2,500 miles from Africa to South America to support worldwide safe drinking water projects.
You can follow her progress via a marine tracking system and also donate to her cause on rowforwater.com.
Largest Hawaiian Waves in 5 Years Prompt Surfing Competition
by thetodaynews on Dec.09, 2009, under sports
An extreme surfing contest that takes place only when waves are over 20 feet was held for the first time in five years on Tuesday, thanks to the 30-foot waves pounding Oahu’s North Shore.
The contest, popularly known as “The Eddie,” has only been held eight times since the event was founded in 1984.
A TheTodayNews.com staffer offered to fly out there with his 10-foot kayak for a photo op, but we turned him down. Not only are we too cheap, we also like him too much!
Arena Football is Back
by thetodaynews on Dec.08, 2009, under sports
The Arena Football League (now called Arena Football 1) announced today it is returning for the 2010 season, after a one-year league hiatus due to a troubled business model.
The announcement will also presumably bring a return of professional football cheerleaders to the city of Cleveland.
The city’s NFL franchise, The Cleveland Browns, has refused for decades to bring on a cheerleading squad, citing they wished to remain focused on the football team. But considering the Browns’ current 1-11 season record their front office may want rethink that strategy, noting that The Cleveland Gladiators, supported by their dance team The Cleveland Gladiator Goddesses, reached the AFL playoffs during their inaugural 2008 Cleveland season.
Tiger Woods Divorce Looming?
by thetodaynews on Nov.30, 2009, under sports
It’s never a good sign when the top Thanksgiving weekend news story is not about Black Friday or the Detroit Lions, but rather about your wife smashing the back window of your car with a golf club at 2am after a supermarket tabloid claimed you were having an affair.
That is exactly what happened to Tiger Woods over the weekend.
Tiger’s image has been carefully controlled by his PR people over the years. In the Far East he is marketed as a Thai, shown only with his Thai/Chinese mother, and in America he is marketed as an African-American, shown only with his African-American/Chinese father.
How will Tiger handle a situation his PR people cannot control? Only time will tell…
2010 Super Bowl Halftime Show: The Who
by thetodaynews on Nov.24, 2009, under entertainment, sports

It is being widely discussed that classic British rock band The Who will be performing in the halftime show of Super Bowl XLIV.
Although we give props to Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend for their contribution to rock and roll, we can’t help but yawn at the selection of another “safe” (and, let’s be honest, “old”) halftime band, a lingering result of Janet Jackson’s 2004 famous nip-slip at her performance during Super Bowl XXXVIII.
It looks The Today News.com staffers will, once again, use the Super Bowl halftime as an opportunity to refill the bowls of Cheetos, talk about their favorite commercials and take a pee break!
